Rail3d Documentation

This is the download site for the User Guides to the Rail3D program. You can also find an online, html version here, in case you have problems with ms html Help, or don’t want to download the whole thing at once.

If you are having trouble opening the downloaded help file, this might be due to recent security fixes in Windows — see support.microsoft.com for a fix

Rail3D 2kD

The User Guide for the current version of Rail3D.

You can also get the tutorials here. However, this version is somewhat out of date and has been superseded by Rail3dWiki:Main.Tutorials. See in particular the new beginners’guide on the Wiki.

Rail3D Wiki

The Rail3D Wiki is a new interactive site where you can create your own tutorials, describe layout projects, pass on tips and tricks, or whatever. The site (launched on 28 November 2004) is still experimental - the intention is that it should be complementary to the conventional User Guide, and allow more people to become involved in the documentation process.

Please visit the Rail3dWiki and feel free to contribute.

Rail3d Classic (Obsolete)

You only need these files if you are using the old version of Rail3d. In theory, all the information that is still valid has been copied to the new User Guide.

The User Guide for Rail3d Classic has been split into two parts: the first part deals with the operation of the Rail3D program itself, and the other part describes how to create stock, scenery and signals for Rail3D using the Stock and Scenery Editor.

  • Download User Guide rail3duserguide.chm (1.7 mb 18/03/03) Updated for R3D 117
  • Online html version of main User Guide
  • Download User Guide for stock and Scenery Editor stockeditorhelp.chm (1.1MB, 18/03/03). You only need this file if you want to build your own rolling stock, scenery, or signals for Rail3D.
  • Online html version of Editor User Guide

Note: the Rail3D Classic documentation has not been revised significantly since March 2003, when development of the program was frozen until Rail3D 2k3 was released. However, I did take the opportunity to improve the formatting a little bit when they were moved to this site. If you already have them, it’s not worth downloading another copy.

Rail3D documentation in your language

Unfortunately, the limited time we have available for maintaining the documentation, and the complexity of the Rail3D project, make it difficult for us to offer any language other than English. However, if you would like to help translate the User Guides, please contact the documentation volunteers via the address below.
